Personal Insurance / RV

RV Insurance

An RV is a vehicle and a residence at the same time, and the policy has to cover both. The question that changes everything is how much of the year you actually live in it, because full-time use needs coverages a weekend camper does not.

What It Covers

The parts of the policy, in plain terms.

  • Physical damage

Collision and comprehensive on the unit itself, including hail, falling limbs and road debris.

  • Liability

On a motorhome this is auto liability. On a towable it usually extends from the tow vehicle while moving, which is why the next item matters.

  • Vacation liability

Covers you while the RV is parked and being used as a residence, which is when most guest injuries actually happen.

  • Personal effects and attached accessories

Everything you keep in it, plus awnings, satellite gear and the rest. These need their own limits.

How it plays out

You are set up at a campground for a long weekend, the awning is out, and a guest trips on a stabilizer jack and breaks a wrist. The RV is parked and not being driven, so this is vacation liability, not auto liability.

Frequently Asked Questions

RV Insurance questions we get.

Does my auto policy cover a travel trailer?
Liability generally extends from the tow vehicle while you are towing. It does not cover damage to the trailer itself, anything inside it, or liability while it is parked and occupied. Those need an RV policy.
What is full-timer coverage?
It is for people who use the RV as their primary residence. It adds personal liability and medical payments similar to a homeowners policy, because a standard RV policy assumes you have a house somewhere providing that.
Is my stuff inside the RV covered?
Only up to the personal effects limit on the policy, which is usually modest by default. If you keep tools, electronics or outdoor gear in it, raise that limit.

Dave is an amazing agent, and Kim is great too. They both worked very hard to get me the best rates. I felt they had my best interest at heart, not just what was good for them.

I just finished buying a house. My previous agent couldn’t find coverage for it. My realtor told me that “Dave always has an answer for her problems.” She couldn’t have been more right.

I highly recommend David Bartal. David took the time to listen to my circumstances and worked efficiently to get me quotes quickly. Within minutes, I had both my vehicles insured at a price I could actually afford. A very happy and satisfied customer.
