Life Insurance

Life insurance has more sales pressure attached to it than any other line, which is why most people avoid the conversation. The honest version is short: for the large majority of households, term insurance sized to the mortgage and the years until the kids are grown does the job at a cost that is not disruptive.

What It Covers

The parts of the policy, in plain terms.

  • Term life

Covers a fixed period, commonly 10 to 30 years, at the lowest cost per dollar of coverage. This is the right answer for most families.

  • Whole and universal life

Permanent coverage that builds cash value. Costs considerably more per dollar of death benefit and suits specific estate or business planning needs rather than general family protection.

  • Final expense

Smaller permanent policies aimed at funeral and end-of-life costs, generally with simplified underwriting.

  • Business uses

Key person coverage and buy-sell funding, which are ordinary business planning rather than personal protection.

How it plays out

A household with a mortgage, two kids and one main earner loses that income. Term insurance sized to clear the mortgage and cover the years until the kids are independent is the difference between a family staying in the house and a family selling it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Life Insurance questions we get.

How much life insurance do I need?
A workable starting point is enough to clear the mortgage and other debt, replace income for the years your dependents still need it, and cover education if that applies. We will work the actual arithmetic with your numbers rather than quoting a multiple of salary.
Is term or whole life better?
For most families, term. It buys the most protection per dollar during the years the protection is genuinely needed. Permanent policies solve specific estate and business problems and cost considerably more, so they should be chosen for a reason, not by default.
Do I need a medical exam?
Not always. Plenty of carriers now write meaningful coverage on simplified or accelerated underwriting with no exam, particularly at younger ages and moderate face amounts.
What happens to my employer life insurance if I leave?
It typically ends with the job. Some plans allow conversion at a higher cost. An individual policy you own stays yours regardless of where you work, which is the main argument for having one.

Dave is an amazing agent, and Kim is great too. They both worked very hard to get me the best rates. I felt they had my best interest at heart, not just what was good for them.

I just finished buying a house. My previous agent couldn’t find coverage for it. My realtor told me that “Dave always has an answer for her problems.” She couldn’t have been more right.

I highly recommend David Bartal. David took the time to listen to my circumstances and worked efficiently to get me quotes quickly. Within minutes, I had both my vehicles insured at a price I could actually afford. A very happy and satisfied customer.
